Naivasha is a popular weekend getaway for the Nairobi peeps. It has a lake (but only hippos swim these waters), a National Park and numerous campsites. Everyone says it’s only about an hour-or-two-drive away. This is mostly true for the way to Naivasha, but the way back to Nairobi takes at least twice as long, if not longer, with broken and overloaded trucks crawling up the single lane that takes you back to Nairobi, which is situated on a high plateau. Anyways, it is truly worth it and our intern group spent a relaxing weekend there together.

The special deal with the Hell’s Gate National Park is that you can walk it or take the bike! Unfortunately, the first time I got there I got the worst bike ever. Internally, I was swearing a lot, but I got compensated by beautiful and exciting views.
Hell’s Gate National Park: Supposedly the inspiration for the landscape of The Lion King. It was my first encounter with free-living Zebras, wild boars and cheeky monkeys! The Zebras are very used to the visitors, actually quite annoyed by the paparazzi, they love to turn around as soon as you get the camera out.
Frolicking wildebeest in one of the private sanctuaries.
Down at Cornelly’s, a popular hostel right by the lake.
And one of the charming and very open huts that fit our intern income (=zero) quite well… haha!!! The plus side of this camp site was its location on the hill, we got rewarded with a gorgeous sunrise, a nice breeze and a view over the lake.
